Edington House is a careful refurbishment of a 1970s modernist home near Cambridge, showing how a building can grow without losing its architectural integrity. The project’s central move is the conversion of the modest garage into a generous garden studio. The new space is shaped by the proportions, rhythm and material language of John Meunier’s original design, allowing the former garage to become newly useful while still appearing embedded within the house’s wider composition. Its position strengthens the relationship between the home and garden, giving the clients additional living space without disturbing the calm discipline of the original architecture.

Alongside this, performance was discreetly improved and the interior adapted for modern use. The result is a renewed modernist house where alterations are hidden in plain sight.

New interventions are absorbed into the existing architecture, altering and adding space in plain sight while preserving the house’s original integrity.
